The apostle Thomas, who doubted the truth of Christ's resurection, is shown inserting two fingers in the wound Christ sustained when he was crusified. This tangible evidence dispels Thomas's doubts and, by extension those of any sceptics. Althought few of his paintings survive, Polidoro was one of the most celebrated painter of the 16th-century Italy. This altarpiece was commissioned by the Farone, an important Sicilian Family. Althought in compromised condition, its imposing composition and bold fortshortening hint at Polidoro's abilities.
