y, trying hard not to show Janehow disappointed and frightened and despairingshe felt. Nancy Lee was as slow and plodding aworker as Jane was swift and brilliant. Further-more she regarded writing as some sort of magicprocess that you could no more learn by practicethan you could learn to fly without a substitutefor wings. Also, Nancy, if careless, was generallyforehanded ; if she had promised to do something,she did it right away, not so much from a sense ofduty as because she wanted to get it off her mind.Janes predicament, with less than a week in whichto produce a story worthy of Fair Oaks and theShort Story Class, seemed to her perfectly hopeless,and disgraceful besides. For once Jane A. A.,whom Nancy had been extremely proud of, hadfailed to come up to expectations. Now Nancy was not an adept at hiding her feel-ings, and Janes hurt look showed her plainly thatshe had failed to do so now. No, said Jane quietly, I dont think you canhelp me. Nobody can, much ; Im Jane A. A. for 214

ALL I NEED IS A GOOD START JANE A. A. CONCENTRATES sure in this thing. The story I submit must bemy own honest work. I—I just thought Id tell you. Oh, dear ! sighed Nancy forlornly. I wishyou hadnt, because Im worried stiff, Jane, and asIve said and youve said, I cant help one bit. Oh,I wish I could ! Why, a week—less than a week—is just no time at all. Nonsense ! sniffed Jane, spurred up by Nan-cys final statement. A week is long enough towrite dozens of stories. All I need is a good start.I thought maybe youd have some little idea—funny story or anecdote or something—that wouldgive me a push, and then Id be off. If youhavent, never mind. And for hats sake, dontworry ! Its not your funeral. You said that exactly like Phyllis Knight,announced Nancy stiffly. Im sure I wish Icould give you a start, Jane, but thats just thevery part of writing that I never can do myself.So I dont think you need be cross with me. Jane patted her friends shoulder repentantly.Im not cross, N. Lee;
